Striving to cultivate an undeniable impact for teachers and students

Teaching has always been in my DNA

Teaching was not my first career choice. Initially I wanted to be a neonatologist and take care of sick babies but something kept pulling me back to education. When I think about it now, teaching has always been in my DNA.

As a child, I remember lining up my dolls and giving them reading lessons so they would love to read as much as I did. I've always been fascinated by the power of education to spark new ideas and create those "lightbulb" moments when breakthrough is achieved.

There's nothing quite like witnessing that moment when your students finally get it — the pride and excitement they show makes it all worthwhile.

Coaching changed my practice

In my first year as a teacher I struggled greatly. I often joke that I fired and rehired myself so many times that year I lost count.

When I enrolled in a new teacher support program, coaching saved my sanity and my career. Though the sessions with my mentor were limited, the few times I met with her made such a difference in my teaching practice. I would later earn my school's Teacher of the Year recognition and a district award for improved student learning gains.

As I experienced consistent success in the classroom with my students, I wanted to share what I learned to help other teachers experience their own success.

A rich and extensive career

During my 19 years in education, I served as a teacher, peer evaluator, trainer, mentor, and instructional coach supporting school leaders, coaches, and teachers across K-12 and postsecondary settings in (at the time) the 7th largest school district in the country.

As part of the first cohort of the Gates Foundation's Effective Teachers Program, I supported hundreds of teachers to enhance their teaching practice. It felt like a master class in effective teaching, coaching, adult learning, and leadership practices.

Paying forward the knowledge I gained, I served as a mentor working with new teachers and interns, then as a district coach supporting teacher leaders and school leaders in 50+ schools. My work also included coaching new assistant principals on the Effective Teaching Framework.

Because adult learners need a champion too

The late and great Rita Pierson's quote, "Every child deserves a champion. An adult who will never give up on them...and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be", was my north star and anchor as a new teacher

When I transitioned to working with educators, I realized this was not just applicable to students. Adult learners also need champions to support and challenge them as they strive to be the best version of themselves in their work and in their lives.

This is the premise on which I founded Transcend Learning Consulting. Through our work, I hope to support leaders to champion the human potential and success of teachers so they are better positioned to do the same for their students.
